The Shipwreck and Treasure Museum was created to preserve the history of Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard – famous for its many sunken ships, pirates and dangerous shoals. These three islands have seen some of the most interesting shipwrecks in the country, from centuries-old sailing ships to modern cruise liners and whale-watching boats. The History
In 1881, the SS Central America left the port in San Francisco carrying gold from the California Gold Rush. When the ship sank off the coast of North Carolina, it was rumored to have $100 million in gold on board – more than was ever found at any other wreck site. The truth is that no one will ever know exactly how much gold went down with the ship, but what we do know is that there was tons of it!
What to See
This museum is a fun place to visit any time of the year. The exhibit changes seasonally so you’re always seeing something new. However, my favorite part of the museum is the shipwreck room. It really takes your imagination for a dive into what it would have been like to be on one of those old sailing ships. I highly recommend checking this museum out if you’re interested in learning about this area’s rich maritime past!
How to Experience it
Shipwrecks are the second most common marine disaster, but what do you know about them? You can learn all about wrecks at the Shipwreck and Treasure Museum in Key West. This museum houses more than 30,000 artifacts from shipwrecks around the globe, including gold coins and bars, cannons, navigational instruments, tools from sunken fishing vessels that have never been seen again. It’s a fascinating look into some of the most intriguing stories from our maritime history.
Where to Eat
One great place to grab a bite is Casa Picasso. There are several locations in the San Diego area, but my favorite is on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. The restaurant is located right on the water, so you can take in the scenery while you enjoy a meal. For breakfast, I recommend the Eggs Benedict or Huevos Rancheros–both are absolutely delicious! If you’re looking for a more substantial lunch, try their chicken salad sandwich or one of their pastas.
